hope_calaris: (Pinguin - Kalt)
It's freaking cold, and I'm not amused. Yesterday I spent five minutes in front of the German Philology Institute searching for my bike. I couldn't identify it because the snow made every bike look alike. *headdesk* I don't like snow. I don't like the cold. I don't like the weather forecast telling me how freaking cold it will get tomorrow.

On to other news ... I really shouldn't start a new meme the weekend I'm out of town and when I have an exam the next week. It only results and missed days from the meme *whistles* Anyway, on with the days:

Day 02 – A book or series you wish more people were reading and talking about
"Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert" by Sasa Stanisic ... to be honest, I only have the book cover left because my ex-boyfriend gave the book itself never back and I'm not exactly inclined to ask for it, but still -- the book is amazing. It's about a little boy growing up in Bosnia, the war there, the escape and Germany as the new home. Yet it's so much more: stories inside stories, buildings playing instruments, what Tito would say, surviving bomb attacks, the first love ... and everything told with so much honesty, intelligence and wit it makes me want to buy the paperback just to have it again.

Day 03 – The best book you’ve read in the last 12 months

Puh ... er ... let me take a look at my book shelves -- So, okay, I will cheat a bit, but this is my meme so live with it. "Romanticism: An Anthology", edited by Duncan Wu. I can't help it, I like Romanticism, and I like poetry. However, the most awesome thing about this book are the biographies of the different authors. Better than any movie, really. Lord Byron alone should get his own hall of fame (he more or less has: places and streets are named after him in Greece; keep in mind that he never actually took part in the Greek fight for freedom, he died too early for that, but alas ... ).

Day 04 – Your favorite book or series ever
Gosh, this is hard ... I don't really have a favorite to be honest. I like the "Mortal Instruments Trilogy Cycle" by Cassandra Clare. I love the characters, every single one of them, I love the storyline, the h/c, the daddy!issues ... she basically caters to all of my favorite kinks. I'm really happy that she decided there are more stories to be told in that universe. ♥

Day 05 – A book or series you hate
Hate is such a strong word ... I prefer 'strong dislike' for any "Dirk Pitt"-book by Clive Cussler. His hero is basically a Gary Stue - perfect in any way imaginable. He's extremely good-looking, will blend you with his awesomness, has just to take a look at a woman for her to lose her clothes, knows it all and is all around liked. I felt sick reading the first hundred pages, then I threw the book away. It doesn't help that Dirk is a diver and most of the books play underwater ... irks.

Day 06 – Favorite book of your favorite series OR your favorite book of all time

Déjà vu ... I can't really see the difference to day 4, so read that instead. (Because, even if the or means I have to pick the other one, I'm still going with the Mortal Instruments.)
hope_calaris: (Dr. Horrible - Aaaaaah)
I'm in the mood for another meme, so here we go ... the book meme! (taken from [livejournal.com profile] leviathans_moon )

Day 01 – A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)
I'm going with the one I wish would end already: the "Inheritance Cycle" by Christopher Paolini. It was supposed to be a trilogy, but -- oh wonder -- the guy thought he could wring a bit more money out of this and won't stop writing. I know some of you like his books, but I think they're some of the worst in recent years. He stole from all four corners of fantasy literature, has a hero who's even dumber than Nibelungen's Siegfried (who, in my opinion, isn't the sharpest tool in the box anyway) and don't get me started on how he accuses his readers of ripping of his ideas. Pot calling kettle, anyone? The only characters I even remotely enjoyed in the books were the dwarf, the dragon, and the anti-hero.

Oh, and if Clive Cussler would please stop writing obnoxious Dirk Pitt-novels I'd be a happy camper as well.

the schedule for the next 29 days )

PS: For everybody who only reads this through his/her flist, I've got a new header.

I'm done with the week from hell and I'm tired and lazy and HAPPY THANKGSGIVING, EVERYONE! Also, the answer to all of our celebration days seems to cook something and then watch Supernatural, as Cate put it so nicely. Or, in case of tonight, watch our Irish Lecturer putting together a session (traditional Irish music played in an informal setting aka pub, for all you non-Irish ;). If I'm not asleep by then, that's it.

Anyway, since I need to get going in half an hour again, here have some meme in the meantime.

1. My username is ______ because ______.
[livejournal.com profile] hope_calaris is never ever taken, no matter where I sign up. I started out with only Hope, 'cause that is awesome and meaningful all for itself, but then I "borrowed" Calaris from [livejournal.com profile] khalaris 'cause that's awesome as well and has a nice ring to it. Also, it's completely unique.

2. My name is _____ because ______.
Christine, because that's the middle name of my mum. I quite like it. To most of my family and friends I'm Tine, which means fire in Irish as I found out this week. Pretty cool, isn't it? Only Gocker is allowed to call me Tinchen and that only because I get to call him Gocker instead of Volker.

3. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
"Außer Haus", because I was 'pressured' into having an online journal when I moved out to begin my studies in Greifswald.

4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
"Die Welt", because basically my flist is my connection to everybody and everything I care about.

5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.
The white garden bench back home! One of my favorite places in the world. Nothing compares to sitting there on a warm and sunny sommer's day, reading a book and enjoying the mild wind playing with the leaves of the lilac. "Thankful" is written in the icon as well, because a day like in the picture always reminds of me how blessed I'm with the life I have.

I made [livejournal.com profile] rei17 tag me to talk about Jace Wayland from the "Mortal Instruments"-trilogy.

1) Do you like this character?
*rofl* No, but I do love him. How could I not? He has daddy-issues surpassing even Dean Winchester's. He has also Dean's wit and street smartness, Sam's emo!pain and knowledge about the things that go bump in the night, he has Arthur's "I don't seem to care, but I love you nevertheless"-attitude and fighting skills, he's fierce and proud, he's the best hunter his age, he can be so honest it breaks your heart, he's borderline self-destructing, and he's loyal to death.

2) What name(s) do you call this character?
I think I spent most part of the first book calling him emo!kid or Dean or Arthur. He's sooooo like Arthur (need to picture Jace? Just think Arthur). All defiant and pretending not to care, but on the inside a little kid who wants his dad to love him and be proud of him. Yet I like his real name, Jace, best. It's a pretty name.

3) What image/color do you associate with this character?
Gold and white like an angel.

4) What song do you associate with this character?
I listened to the new album by Snow Patrol the whole time while reading, so it's no wonder why I picked these songs.

Snow Patrol - "If there's a rocket tie me to it" ... "I break, you don't, I was always set to self-destruct though; The fire, the fire, it cracks and barks like primal music" ... that's Jace. Breaking and self-destructing all the time, but with a fiery compassion for everyone he loves.

Snow Patrol
- "Take back the city" ... basically the whole song is Jace'S theme song.

"Take back the city for yourself tonight
I'll take back the city for me
Take back the city for yourself tonight
I'll always associate Jace with NYC, with its dark corners and underground world. Jace is at home there, it's his.

"God knows you put your life into its hands
And it's both cradled you and crushed
But now it's time to make your own demands"
Among other things I really loved the whole mythology about angels in the books and Jace is by one way or another more than anybody else associated with it and it has ruined his life in many ways, but his life changes when he mets Clary the first time and he realizes that there might be something else in store for him.

"It's a mess, it's a start
It's a flawed work of art
Your city, your call
Every crack, every wall
Pick a side, pick a fight
Get your epitaph right
You can sing, 'til you drop
'Cause the fun just never stops"
Shadowhunter life through and through. It never stops. And Jace loves to fight. Mostly just because it drowns out everything else he's worried about and because he thinks in the greater scheme he has way too many flaws and just doesn't matter.

"I love this city tonight
I love this city always
It bears its teeth like a light
And spits me out after days
But we're all gluttons for it
We know what's wrong and what's right
For every time it’s been hit
Take back the city tonight"
NYC isn't a nice city in this book with all its faeries and werewolves and vampires and so on. Jace loves to merge with this other world. I imagine him actually getting lost in the streets chasing demons etc., not caring about getting hurt.

"Tell me you never wanted more than this
And I will stop talking now
One perfect partner, one eternal kiss"
Just one name: Clary.

5) What blood-type do you think this character is?
Something rare, probably A neg.

6) Which character do you like to put his character with?
Clary, 'cause he loves her and she loves him, and they had to get through a really crappy time to get where they're now.
The whole Lightwood family, 'cause that's his family no matter what.

7) What would you want to say to this character?

Can I quote Bobby? "Family doesn't end with blood." / "Valentine's an ass, just forget him!" / "I love it when you're overprotective."

8) What do you want to do with this character: shake hands, hug, or kiss?
Hug, a lot. He needs it with such a crappy father. And if Clary doesn't watch it I'd like to kiss him one time.

9) Please choose a few friends with your choice of character
Ask and you shall be served.

I got tagged with the random 25 things. So here we go.

"Once you've been tagged you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you."
Mir doch egal, was gewisse Leute dazu sagen.
  25. Ich bin konfliktscheu.

I apparently suck at this happiness meme, but I officially declare it finished after today.

Happiness meme

Tag 7 (Freitag)

a) eine Unterzuckerung

Day 3
Slept in cause Christmas Dinner was a) full of booze and b) went really long and c) was fun. In the afternoon the whole family celebrated advent and I decided to join my brothers on the trip to Greifswald/Rügen/Stralsund the next day.

Day 4
Had much fun with my brothers seeing Sassnitz and Binz again. We visited a submarine and I think I may be slightly claustrophobic. Also, it may be the dumbest idea ever to play soundbites from The Boot (with all the "OMG! The ship is sinking, we're going to die-feeling") ... just a thought.

hope_calaris: (Default)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] geminigrl11 for the Christmas Card! I loved it.

Furtermore, I got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] rei17 (we have SO MUCH FUN inventing new ways to let Arthur suffer ... ups, I probably shouldn't have told you this ... *whistles*) with this:

The rules are that for 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day.

I got tagged yesterday, but didn't have the time to respond, so here we go:

Day 1
I did it! I finally finished writing that stupid, stupid paper for my class. *tanzt den unglaublich schwierigen Pinguinhuldigungstanz* It drove me crazy this last week and forced me to sit hours in front of Hugo not write Merlin-Fanfic, which I deeply craved, but something about exegesis! *le sigh* But now it's over. For glorious two weeks I can do whatever I want. Yeah me!

Day 2
I'm home! I looooove to be home. I can sit for hours on the couch and read stuff I didn't have time for before or I can finally write fanfic. I can also start looking through your whislists ... so, my lovely girls on the flist, don't think I forgot you - it just takes a little while longer. See it the same way [livejournal.com profile] tuppeny and I do - we just extend Christmas till we have all the presents (btw, do you have any special whish I can fulfill, Claire?)

I just can't resist memes ...

What are your nicknames?
Tine ... sometimes Tinchen, but it's only Gocker who is allowed to call me this.

How do you style your hair?
Sometimes in a ponytail when they're long enough, sometimes I just brush back some parts ...

What's the last book you read?
The last I finished was "Schwarzbuch USA".

What color shirt are you wearing now?

If you could only have 5 songs to listen to for the rest of your life, which 5 would they be?
Brian Kennedy - Life, love, happines (it makes me happy)
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (I hum it everytime I have to do the laundry - I don't know why)
Rob Thomas - Ever the same (reminds me of Tintenherz - can't go wrong)
Flogging Molly - If I ever leave this world alive (IRELAND!)
Coldplay - Viva la vida (it's simply awesome)

Is your ear itchy?
This question is kinda creepy.

Do you nap a lot?
Nope, but I love to sleep in.

Who was the last celebrity you had an "erotic" dream with (if ever)?
Not erotic, but I dreamed about Arthur/Bradley James.

What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
Current fandom: Supernatural
Current obsession: Merlin.*thud* I can't believe it, but I love that show despite its crappy special effects.
Current addiction: Probably fangirling about how awesome Arthur is.

Last person you talked to:
My parents

How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
When I finally manage to get up for real, not so long to actually get ready, but I'm a slow eater and like to watch The Daily Show with John Stewart while eating breakfast.

What websites do you visit daily?
lj, gmx

How do you take your coffee?
Did you get my mail? Nope? See, I still don't drink coffee.

What are you listening to, right now?

What's the last song that got stuck in your head?
Meat Loaf - I'd do anything for love

What cell phone model do you own?
Nokia ... something ...

What is your favorite weather?
Warm and sunny with a light breeze.

How are you?
Happy and relaxed.

Is that it?

May your strength give us strength
May your faith give us faith
May your hope give us hope
May your love give us love
